Falmouth DPW Plans on Replacing Bluestone Sidewalks on North Main St.

FALMOUTH – Bluestone sidewalks on North Main Street in Falmouth will be replaced with bluestone.

The town’s Department of Public Works plans on replacing the sidewalk from Post Office Road to Peg Noonan Park, including near the crosswalk at Shore Street extension. The bluestone hasn’t held up under machinery used to plow in the winter.

“We get multiple complaints each year from either visitors or residents or people visiting the restaurants and shops tripping and falling, some of them getting hurt, getting bruised up,” said Falmouth Department of Public Works Deputy Director Peter McConarty.

Bluestone was placed on Main Street in 2002, but due damage over the years, town officials decided it’s time to replace them.

It’s expected to take up to five weeks in the spring to replace the 735 feet of bluestone on North Main Street and the cost would be around $35,000 from the DPW’s budget.

That is the best time to do the work, according to McConarty.

“What we find is that early spring seems to work better, that’s before Falmouth really starts taking off,” said McConarty. “When you go into the October time frame you still have a lot of visitors and a lot of people that are coming down to Falmouth so we want to see if we can get it in the April timeframe.”

There has been no action taken by selectmen on the matter yet, but will be decided on at a future meeting where residents and businesses can also raise questions and concerns.
