Falmouth To Hold Bike Safety Forum

bike on beachFALMOUTH – Safer roads for bikes and cars is the focus of an upcoming meeting in Falmouth.

The Falmouth Bikeways Committee is working on the project to increase the safety of local bike paths and roadways in the wake of increased cycling in the region.

Falmouth Bikeways Committee member Ted Rowan said a bike summit on Cape Cod last spring included a startling statistic.

“One of the facts that arose from that is that in 2030, there will be three times the number of bikes on Cape Cod,” he said.

After the bike summit, the Falmouth Bikeways Committee distributed a survey in which they asked people what roads they used for biking recreationally and biking for transportation.

“People in Falmouth are a hardy bunch. About 55 percent of respondents rode their bikes year-round. And an older bunch. Most of them were over 50. But they all felt that safety–that the roads were dangerous,” he said.

A meeting scheduled in a couple weeks will add more information so that the committee can target certain roadways.

Rowan said that roads that lead to the beach will be a priority for safety improvements, given the results of the survey.

“We’d like to establish some safe corridors for cyclists–we’re obviously a beach community–and safe routes to get to the beach. Forty percent of the respondents road their bikes to the beach,” he said.

A meeting seeking public input on bike safety improvements on Falmouth roadways is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hermann Room in the basement at Falmouth Public Library.
