The Steamship Authority is planning a third slip at its Woods Hole terminal.

WOODS HOLE – Falmouth selectmen are asking the Steamship Authority to stop an early morning freight run to Martha’s Vineyard, citing noise concerns for residents in Woods Hole.

The board voted to send a letter to the Authority, asking them to push back the freight boat from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The vote was 3-0.

During a meeting this week, Selectman Doug Jones expressed hope that the boat line would change the schedule to accommodate local residents.

“They have been responsive to the concerns. I think it’s appropriate for us to express the concerns,” Jones said.

“I think it’s a reasonable request from the Town of Falmouth to moving forward not have freight trucks coming through the town that early in the morning,” Jones added.

The letter comes as the Authority looks to finalize their passenger and freight schedule for 2018.

The 5:30 a.m. freight run has operated since 2012. The Authority began receiving complaints about the early morning noise in 2015, according to Betsy Gladfelter, the town’s representative on the Steamship Authority board.

This week’s meeting came in response to a petition signed by 62 residents asking the boat line to stop the early morning run.
