FALMOUTH – Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito was at Falmouth Town Hall on Thursday afternoon to take part in the signing of the town’s community compact.

The Compact initiative gives state cities and towns the chance to make needed improvements through collaboration with and support from the Commonwealth.

Each compact is a voluntary, mutual agreement between the state and the local government.

“Every compact is unique, because you as a community think about what you want to focus on,” said Polito.

Falmouth town officials, including Selectman Doug Jones, signed the compact and became the 248th city and town to do so out of the 351 across the state.

A Compact Initiative cabinet, headed by Polito, enables the state to work closely with leaders from the municipalities to support public interests and develop mutual standards for governing effectively.

Plymouth and Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo, Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket State Rep. Dylan Fernandes and 3rd Barnstable District State Rep. David Vieira attended the ceremony.

“The Town of Falmouth knows best how to take care of the Town of Falmouth, they understand that, but they also understand that there are broader issues that state government can do more efficiently and effectively, and those best practices are what they’re going to be sharing with this community,” said deMacedo.

Polito also attended the signing of Bourne’s community compact earlier in the day.

The state offers a number of incentives for communities that join the community compact, including having a grant program for compact communities, municipalities getting extra points on certain grants and technical resources from the state to help communities achieve their goals.
