BARNSTABLE – Barnstable police say the number of car, home and business break-ins are lower than usual this month.

Barnstable Police Sergeant Sean Sweeney said that they have had very few reported break-in cases during the holiday season.

He said that is because of an increased effort this year on the part of police with the formation in recent years of the Barnstable Street Crimes Unit and officers keeping an eye on shopping centers, plazas, malls and parking lots.

Sweeney also said that arrests of suspects involved with Hyannis car break-ins and the visibility of police cruisers have led to less criminal activity.

But he is advising residents to keep their cars and homes locked, especially during the holiday season.
