HYANNIS – Jet Blue’s inaugural flight from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York to Hyannis touched down at Barnstable Municipal Airport yesterday to an enthusiastic welcome from the community.

The festive welcome included a traditional water cannon salute, as well as goody bags, free food and other gifts for those on the first flight, which arrived at 1:05.

Many of those first passengers said they booked their flight without knowing it was the first one and they were delighted with the extra amenities.

Local, regional and business leaders were on hand to greet almost 100 passengers who arrived on the first flight. Robert O’Brien, chairman of the Barnstable Airport Commission, said the new airport building will make a good impression on the visitors.

“To see these people coming in, they’re going to be impressed with what they are seeing here. It’s a wonderful introduction to Hyannis and the Cape,” he said.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross said the chamber has been working hard to get Jet Blue to provide the service to Hyannis. “For the last two and a half to three years, we’ve been working really hard to increase air routes into Hyannis. This is like Christmas. A lot of hard work paid off,” she said.

Northcross said her goal is for there to be year-round service between Hyannis and New York.

Barnstable Municipal Airport Manager Roland “Bud” Breault said he also hopes the Jet Blue service is just the beginning of increased service to metropolitan areas from Hyannis.

Jet Blue will offer the seasonal service from Hyannis to New York through September.
