“Food for Kids” Program Starts at the HYCC on June 26

HYANNIS – The Barnstable Recreation Department is partnering with a summer food service program called “Kids Summer Meals” to provide children with a free lunch and snack during the summer.

Beginning on June 26, kids ages 1 to 18 will receive a meal and snack at Hyannis Youth and Community Center Monday through Friday.

“We’re just trying to get the kids in the area fed,” said HYCC Youth Center Manager Mark Boardley. “So many kids go without, especially during the summer and they kind of rely on the schools for the lunches, breakfasts, snacks and so forth. It’s just trying to continue the same programming that the school takes care of during the school year.”

Lunch will be served from 12:15-1 p.m. and snacks from 3-3:30 p.m.

The program runs until August 25.

Boardley said that they’re going to start off with about 40 lunches before they have a better understanding of how many to expect throughout the summer.

But he adds that they are not turning anyone away.

“We have such a demand for a lot of low income people who live in the area, who we see the kids almost on a daily basis, who we know are hungry, who we know are in need of something like this, so we’ll take as many as we can,” said Boardley.
