Former Celtic Herren to Discuss Substance Abuse at Two Cape Events

BARNSTABLE – A former Boston Celtics player will speak to schoolchildren and members of the public at two upcoming events in Barnstable about the hazards and dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

The Barnstable Youth Commission will welcome Chris Herren for the 3rd Annual Community Substance Abuse Prevention Forum and the 7th Grade Youth Summit. Both events aim to raise awareness about substance abuse.

Herren, a Fall River native, lost his career in the NBA due to substance abuse. A draft pick of the Denver Nuggets before being traded to the Celtics, he played just two short years professionally, appearing in his final game in 2000.

Herren has been sober since 2008 and travels the country talking about his struggles with substance abuse.

The Community Substance Abuse Prevention Forum is free and open to the public and is scheduled for March 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Cape Cod Community College. The 7th Grade Youth Summit will be held on March 17 at Cape Cod Community College.

First Student Inc., the Lyndon Paul Lorusso Charitable Foundation, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee are sponsoring the events.
