Former Plymouth Cop Sentenced to a Year in Prison for Excessive Force

gavelBOSTON – A former sergeant for the Plymouth Police Department was sentenced yesterday to a year and one day in prison for using excessive force and falsifying the police report of the incident.

Shawn Coughlin, 47, was convicted in February for striking a handcuffed arrestee in the head and kneeing him in the body which resulted in injury.

There was also evidence at trial that established Coughlin falsified the official police incident reports regarding the incident.

Along with the prison sentence, Coughlin will have one year of supervised release and will pay a $7,500 fine.
