Forum Set for Falmouth Polling Place Discussion

ElectionFALMOUTH – Some residents in Falmouth are asking for voting to be returned to the town’s elementary schools, after polling places were moved to Falmouth High School this year.

A forum will be held on December 11 at 7 pm at Falmouth Public Library to discuss the proposal.

“I’d really like to see all of the schools in town be voting locations,” said State Representative David Vieira (R-Falmouth), “The primary benefit to the electorate is that there would be neighborhood voting again. Folks would actually have locations within their precincts to be able to vote. But I think the peripheral benefit is if we can connect to the school curriculum and also make it a civic engagement opportunity for students,” Vieira added.

Some have expressed concerns about safety challenges posed by voting at elementary schools. A number of ideas have been floated to lessen the impact, including making election day a professional development day for teachers or moving town elections to Saturdays.
