HYANNIS – Doane Beal & Ames has announced that the two ospreys that have seasonally resided on the chimney of the funeral home officially have names, Alpha and Omega.
A panel of funeral home associates and a member from the Audubon Society went through more than 100 entries to select Alpha and Omega, which were submitted by Carolyn Wiedemann of Sandwich.
“We are happy to now have names for these beautiful birds right before they migrate for winter,” said Chris Luciano, manager at Doane Beal & Ames. “We want to thank the community and the families we have been privileged to serve for their entries and input in the naming process.”
Doane Beal & Ames launched the contest to name the birds in September.
For the last four years, this pair of birds has returned to Doane Beal & Ames in the spring to build an intricate stick-and-sod nest for their eggs, which begins a five month period when the ospreys work together to raise their young.
Ospreys are unique among North American raptors for their diet of live fish and their ability dive into water to catch them. Due to their diet, they are often found near coastal waterways, ponds and rivers.
Sometimes confused with bald eagles, ospreys can be identified by their white under parts and a distinctive black eye stripe down the sides of their face.
