Future of Buzzards Bay Park Rests in Bourne Town Meeting Voters’ Hands

BOURNE – Progress on the Buzzards Bay Park project is in the hands of town meeting voters tonight.

Article 2 at the special town meeting asks for $300,000 to finish up phase 1. Article 29 at the regular town meeting asks for just over $1 million in Community Preservation funds for phase 2.

Phase 1 includes the installation of irrigation, an electrical upgrade and a replacement of the current walkway. The $300,000 would cover hydro-seeding, pedestrian walkways, a performance pavilion and other plantings.

The second phase would include additional landscaping, a childrens’ play area with a splash pad, a pavilion with an outdoor movie screen, and a Memorial Grove.

Sallie Riggs with the Main Street Steering Committee updated selectmen at a recent meeting and said that completing both phases would encourage redevelopment in Buzzards Bay.

“To restore and upgrade the park is an action that town residents can take for creating an environment for business that will bring new revenues to the town budget,” she said.

Riggs stressed that the money requested for this work would not be at the burden of the taxpayer since it asks for Community Preservation funds, not budgeting money.

Selectman Michael Blanton advocated for residents to approve the two articles. They also have the approval of the Community Preservation Committee.
