windfarmBOSTON – Gov. Deval Patrick announced today that over 742,000 acres in federal waters off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard will be available for commercial wind energy leasing.

Sally Jewell, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and Walter Cruickshank, the Acting Director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, joined Patrick in making the announcement at the Wind Technology Testing Center in Charlestown, Mass.

Today’s announcement is a momentous occasion and the culmination of years of cooperation and hard work between the Commonwealth and federal officials.” said Patrick.

The proposed area will be located 14 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and will nearly double the federal offshore acreage open for commercial wind energy projects.

The Massachusetts Wind Energy area off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard extends 33 nautical miles southward from its northern boundary and is 47 nautical miles from east to west.

BOEM intends to auction off the area as four leases.
