BARNSTABLE – Governor Charlie Baker has established a task force to form a plan to combat higher than average unemployment rates among certain population groups in the Commonwealth.

Baker signed an executive order today creating the task force today.

“Chronically unemployed populations and regions of our Commonwealth require collaboration with our educators and business community to break down barriers to economic growth and job creation for everyone,” Baker said. “Too many Massachusetts workers have become discouraged as a growing economy unfortunately leaves them behind.”

The task force will be charged with focusing on “target populations” facing chronically high unemployment.

Unemployment rates are between 7 and 12 percent for African Americans, Hispanic or Latino Amercians, certain veterans’ groups and people with disabilities despite a state unemployment rate of 5.8 percent.

The task force will present a strategic plan to the governor by November.
