WEST FALMOUTH – A major grant has been received to help homeowners around West Falmouth Harbor deal with wastewater issues.

West Falmouth Harbor is suffering from nitrogen overloads from septic systems but also from a plume that travels through groundwater from the West Falmouth Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was built up gradient of the harbor about 30 years ago.

“It’s one of the reasons West Falmouth Harbor has a high nitrogen load,” he said.

The $250,000 grant is part of the town’s efforts to deal with pollution in its estuaries.

Falmouth Water Quality Management Committee Chairman Eric Turkington said, “With this money, we’re hoping to sign up 20 homeowners and get them to share the costs of setting up systems that reduce the nitrogen by a lot.”
