Harwich Conservation Trust Announces Series of Winter Events

HARWICH – The Harwich Conservation Trust has announced a series of upcoming events for 2017, with a number of programs scheduled for the winter months.

On Saturday, January 28, officials with the Center for Coastal Studies Whale Disentaglement Division will talk about their efforts to rescue trapped marine life off the coast of Cape Cod. Presenters will discuss the risks and rewards associated with their work.

Snowy owls will be in focus on February 4 when the director of the Mass Audubon Blue Hills Sanctuary gives a presentation on the marking of the birds at Logan Airport. Norman Smith has been researching the animals since 1974 and has had his work featured in National Geographic, among other publications.

The Life of the North American River Otter will be explored on February 11 by Liz Baldwin, the Assistant Director of BiodiversityWorks, a wildlife research organization. Baldwin has spent time documenting the activity of river otters on Martha’s Vineyard.

On February 25, state and federal officials will discuss ecological restoration plans at retired cranberry bogs. The Harwich Conservation Trust is planning to restore the 66-acre Robert Smith Cold Brook Preserve in Harwich to a wetland and coastal stream complex.

All the presentations begin at 2 p.m. There is a suggested $5 donation for each event.

On March 4, the Trust will welcome Marcia and Mark Wilson back to the Harwich Community Center for their 11th annual display of live owls. Early reservation is advised for this program with the ticket price set at $10 for adults and $5 for children.
