HARWICH PORT – The 18th Annual Presidents Brunch, renamed the JFK Presidents Brunch this year, celebrated community service and the future of the region’s Democratic Party.
The Saturday event was organized by the Harwich Democratic Town Committee and featured U.S. Representative William Keating, State Representative Sarah Peake, State Representative Dylan Fernandes and many of the area’s organized party members.
Attendees honored Deb DeCosta with the Mabel Canto Democrat of the Year award and the Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless (HECH) with the James Noonan Community Service Award.
DeCosta was described as an energetic organizer for Cape Cod Democrats. Keating, who said he knew Mabel Canto well, said he could not imagine the award going to a more fitting recipient.
Administrators from HECH were present to accept their award to great applause. Peake said her office has worked with the organization many times and is very thankful for their tireless efforts to improve the greater quality of life in the community.
“It doesn’t matter whether you have a ‘D’ or an ‘R’ after your name, what we’re honoring here today is that we are a community,” she said. “We need to be kind and caring to our neighbors.”
The event also served as a sounding board for Democratic principles during a new Republican presidential administration.
