HYANNIS – The Horace Mann Charter Public School in Hyannis held a reading event on Thursday night to celebrate the school being named as one of four across the country to win the “Show Your Love for Literacy” sweepstakes.
Winning the contest allowed students at Horace Mann receive a certificate for a book of their choice at the Scholastic Book Fair.
“What this means is that each of these children, no matter what circumstance they’re in, has a book in their hand,” said Horace Mann Principal Sheila Kukstis. “Children love to go home with a book and this makes my heart glad.”
The contest is hosted by BJ’s Wholesale Clubs’ “Adopt-a-School” program in collaboration with Kellogg’s and Scholastic Book Fairs.
The school was one of 225 eligible to enter the sweepstakes through BJ’s program.
Horace Mann also won $1,500 worth of books from Scholastic.
“To give young people an opportunity to read more and get books that they might not have access to or just to encourage the reading and learning is very exciting and encouraging,” said Kathy McGee, a Senior National Account Executive with Kellogg.
In celebration of winning the sweepstakes, the school also held a literacy workshop for parents while the students participated in read-aloud activities.
