Hundreds Raise Money in Annual YPD 5K

YARMOUTH – Runners took to the streets of Yarmouth this weekend to raise money for a good cause.

300 runners participated in the 10th Annual YPD Blue 5K Run for a Reason on Sunday, which supports the Yarmouth Police Foundation.

This year’s event was held in honor of Dennis Police Sgt. Craig Stevenson, who died in January after a battle with cancer. Organizers donated proceeds from the race in Stevenson’s name to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund and the Multiple Myeloma Foundation.

“It’s special,” said Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson. “It’s community. It’s really the essence of what we like to do.”

“For our department to see this type of support, it’s refreshing. It really energizes us. This is why we’re here. We’re part of the people and without the people we can’t be the police.” Frederickson added.

The three mile course is run on streets overlooking Bass River and Nantucket Sound. The course starts and ends at the Skipper restaurant.
