HYANNIS – The Steamship Authority has green-lighted a new high speed ferry requested by Hy-Line Cruises for service between Hyannis and Nantucket.

The new boat will be larger and carry about 200 more passengers than the current high speed M/V Grey Lady. Because the Grey Lady will still be used, the new boat will almost double the passenger capacity for Hy-Line for the Nantucket route.

The new boat will replace the M/V Great Point, which is a traditional ferry. Traditional ferries make the trip between Hyannis and Nantucket in two hours and 45 minutes, whereas fast ferries make the trip in one hour.

Hy-Line Marketing Director Philip Scudder says passengers will find some other differences as well. For example, the new boat will have a third deck that will be an open deck.

He said the new boat should be in service by 2015.

Hy-Line has been running ferry service to Nantucket since the Scudder family purchased the Nantucket Boat Company in 1972.
