Falmouth Department of Public Works crews work on a new handicapped ramp at Falmouth Heights Beach.
FALMOUTH – Inmates from the Barnstable County Correctional Facility constructed a handicapped ramp, offering free labor to the Town of Falmouth
The new handicapped-access ramp project at Falmouth Heights started with the heavy equipment and trench work, courtesy of the town’s public works department.
By the time the job was completed, crews dispatched by Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings had spent eight days and expended almost $14,000 worth of labor.
Among the other jobs the inmates have helped with in Falmouth in the past are a facelift to the kids’ playground erected behind the town center, building a new performing arts stage in front of the same Main Street location, and repairing the groundskeepers’ shed at Teaticket Park, not far up the street from both.

An earlier handicapped ramp was built at Old Silver Beach, another of Falmouth’s public swimming venues. Besides helping the legally handicapped, both ramps will come in handy for parents with young children and aging residents.
The finished ramp will be officially dedicated in the weeks ahead.
