IRS Scam Targets Immigrants

immigrationBARNSTABLE – The legal director for Catholic Social Services out of the Fall River Diocese said a new scam targets immigrants in this region.

Attorney Schuyler Pisha, who is Legal Director for Immigration Law Programs at Catholic Social Services, said the issue stems from Obama’s new immigration announcement that will offer relief to many undocumented immigrants, but will require payment of back taxes.

“It appears that someone, or more likely a group of people, are using this as opportunity for a phone scam,” Pisha wrote in an advisory about the issue.

Pisha said a client of his called from an ATM after a man, claiming to be an IRS agent, called and threatened to deport him if he did not make a money transfer to cover his back taxes.

“When we reported this to the Barnstable Police, they said that they had received many similar reports. The IRS website also offers a description of this scam which appears to be widespread,” Pisha wrote.
