JFK Centennial Concert Set for Sunday

HYANNIS –Former President John F. Kennedy would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday, and to commemorate the occasion, the Cape Symphony has invited world-class musicians and guests to perform with the orchestra for the John F. Kennedy Centennial Commemoration concert.

The Sunday evening concert will be presented in conjunction with the JFK Hyannis Museum. It will be held at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center at 5 p.m.

World-renowned cellist Amit Peled will return to the Cape Symphony stage with his mentor and friend Pablo Casals’ cello. He will perform “Song of the Birds”, which was performed by Casals himself at the Kennedy White House in 1961.

Peled, a recording artist, professor, conductor and soloist, has performed on stages all over the world, and gave a performance of “Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1” with the Cape Symphony in 2013.

Award-winning baritone David McFerrin and the Chatham Chorale will add their voices to the multi-media event.

Other guest speakers at the event include former Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf and Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank CEO Dorothy Savarese.

Maria Shriver and Joseph Kennedy III will appear via video and Kennedy family friend and former U.S. Senator Paul Kirk will reflect on JFK’s election and on Jackie Kennedy.
