‘Keystones’ Placed Around the Cape for Passersby to Find

Keystones Project BARNSTABLE – Little stones adorned with images of keys are being placed across the Cape this summer in the hopes of eliciting cheer and discovery.

The Keystones project, started by artist Lenore Lyons and curated by a large group of volunteers, will place 1,000 such stones in various Cape Cod towns by summer’s end.

Lyons said it taps into a classic Cape idiosyncrasy: picking up rocks.

“It’s a way for residents to welcome visitors and also for them to participate,” she said.

On the backs of these keystones will be a link to www.thekeyideaproject.com. There, finders and placers alike can track who has found the stones, write messages and even respond to one of two questions.

“What’s the key to the perfect Cape Cod summer,” or “what vacation nightmare would you like to lock up forever” are the questions Lyons said is meant to be a lighthearted way for finders to share stories with the community.

Lyons’ personal involvement with the key motif has been ongoing. Over 3,000 people participated in “What’s the Key Idea?,” another community art project which took place last year and asked the community, “what would your key open or start or do?”

“People really seem to love stumbling onto something unexpected and beautiful,” she said.

She said that she hopes stone hiders will not go to great lengths to make them difficult to find. Unlike geocaching, a global hobby which hides caches of information or trinkets in picturesque or panoramic places, Lyons said this project aims to hide its items in plain sight.

About 500 stones will be placed by July 4th, and 500 more will be placed throughout the summer.
