Lifeguard Competition Brings Out Top Competitors

CHATHAM – The 40th annual Cape Cod Lifesavers Competition took place on Thursday and hundreds of guards throughout the Cape took part at Harding Beach in Chatham.

Ten teams competed in the competition.

Barnstable Recreation Director Patti Machado said she was proud of her winning staffers.

Barnstable pulled out its 6th year streak as Non-Surf Beach Champions.
“The win is awesome, but it is over all how the team represented us, the Town of Barnstable, that makes me proud,” Machado said.
The following were the Barnstable lifeguards who won events:
 2nd Place – Swim Relay
 Caroline Ells, Meredith Sullivan, Rainey Kelly and Marie Chamberlain
3rd Place – Swim Relay
    Brian Cudiff, Kellen Comer, Liam Grady, Tim McGrath
 2nd – Iron Woman Event
    Marie Chamberlain
1st – Iron Man Event
    Jonathan Dray
3rd, 4/ 1 mile Relay
    James Sturgis Cox, Jack Riley, Mark McLaughlin, Beau Gagnon
2nd – Coed Run Paddle
    Tom Cundiff & Hannah Andres
2nd – Iron Man Relay
    Beau Gagnon, Jon Dray, Tom Cundiff

Falmouth Beach Superintendent Donald Hoffer also fielded a team of  top staffers, a total of 17 this year.

He said the guards look forward to the competition every year.

“It’s a great thing for the kids. They really look forward to it. And of course they have to practice. They’ve been practicing since the beginning of the summer,” he said.
