Local Leaders Present State Bill That Takes on Climate Change

Jessica Lambert

FALMOUTH – Five local leaders from Cape Cod have developed a state bill that aims to make climate change a priority.

The legislation modifies section 21N of the general law, to include that the state will participate in the Paris Climate Agreement’s Green House Gas Emission Standards.

The new law will ensure that state greenhouse emissions standards meet or exceed those put forth by the United Nations.

Jessica Lambert of Falmouth is a co-author of the bill.

“Given the fact that the federal government seems less inclined to honor our global obligations, it’s kind of fallen more on the states to do so,” said Lambert.

The bill will cost the state little to no money and is sitting on the house floor this year.

“As important as the state’s efforts are, they really don’t work well if they don’t come in combination with other efforts, both at the national level and internationally,” said Lambert.

The legislation was edited by Michael Blanton of Bourne and Stephen Craffey of Hyannis.

It’s being proposed by Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr and State Representative Dylan Fernandez.

The bill has been referred to the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resource and Agriculture.
