Local Women Honored at State House Ceremony

BOSTON – Several Cape Cod residents have been selected among this year’s Unsung Heroine recipients on behalf of The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

Lynda Allen of Barnstable was recognized for her efforts serving the cape’s vulnerable young children and their families as the Executive Director for the non-profit Crystal Gardens Children’s Learning Center in Hyannis.

Crystal Gardens provides early childhood education programs as well as intervention and referral services to low-income, particularly minority families.

According to a release from the Commission, Unsung Heroines are women who don’t make the news, but make a difference. They are the women who use their time, talent, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference in their neighborhoods, cities, and towns.

Allen was joined by follow Cape Cod Unsung Heroine recipients Elizabeth Tucker of Dennis, Marie Blackburn and Flannery Rogers both of Falmouth, Jessie Baird of Mashpee, and Francie Randolph of Truro, who were each honored for their own efforts on behalf of women and the community at a May 21st ceremony in the State House’s Great Hall.

Each of the women are nominated by a member of their local legislative delegation and selected by the membership of The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

Last month’s ceremony included remarks from Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and State Representative Colleen Garry who serves as Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators.

The Commission was established nearly two decades ago by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent state agency to advance the rights and opportunities of women across the Commonwealth.
