Lower Cape Police Chiefs Collaborate for Operation Safe Ride

EASTHAM – For a fifth year, Lower Cape police departments have collaborated to make sure New Year’s revelers don’t drink and drive.

Operation Saferide will provide free and sober rides home on New Year’s Eve, beginning at 10 p.m., and running until 4 a.m. January 1.

While the program began in Provincetown, it has expanded all the way to Orleans, and is a measure to increase public safety, and to eliminate any excuse to get behind the wheel impaired.

“No longer are we going to just look at trying to put people behind bars, but we’re trying to send a proactive, preventative approach even to the extent where we’re offering a ride to you,” said Eastham Police Chief Ed Kulhawik. “There’s really no reason for anyone to drink and drive.”

Each department contributed $250 to operate the program, which will be run by both Pride Taxi and Cape Cab.
