Madden Reflects on 8 Years Serving District

Timothy Madden

NANTUCKET – State Representative Timothy Madden is reflecting on his time serving the Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket district before he leaves the seat next Wednesday.

The Nantucket democrat has held the seat for the past eight years and said he was humbled by being the first resident on the Islands to be elected in the district.

“We have great constituents,” Madden said. “They’re bright. They’re caring. They’re conscientious. They’re involved and it’s been an honor and a privilege to be able to represent them over the last eight years.”

Madden said he has enjoyed every minute serving as a representative.

“There’s been some that were more challenging than others and some disappointments you have but all-in-all I consider it, once again, a great opportunity, a learning experience and something that I really enjoyed representing the people,” Madden said.

Madden said he is most proud of his work early on in his tenure to make sure the Cape and Islands were represented on the Oceans Committee and on the state’s Farm to School program, which was recently signed into law by Gov. Charlie Baker.

Although not as flashy, Madden also praised the work done to pass the sewer betterments bill.

“I think that’s going to have potentially significant savings for towns across the Commonwealth regarding how many constituents and betterments there are in different parts of the districts,” Madden said.

Even though he is leaving Wednesday, Madden is still working to move forward bills with incoming Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr.

“It doesn’t end until the final day,” he said.

Madden said starting Thursday he won’t miss the travel to and from Beacon Hill, but he will miss his colleagues.

“Most of the ones I have worked with have been so loyal and engaged and really trying to help their communities and help their constituents, and they are just a great group of people,” Madden said.

He also praised the work done by the Cape Cod delegation.

“We’re a bipartisan group. We get along – republicans, democrats – we don’t care,” Madden said. “We always love to see what’s best for the Cape.”

Falmouth democrat Dylan Fernandes takes over for Madden, who did not run for re-election. Fernandes will be sworn in Wednesday.
