‘Making Ends Meet’ A Benefit for Low Income Cape Codders

restaurant billHYANNIS – Four local nonprofits are banding together this summer to raise money for year-round Cape Codders who struggle to make ends meet.

The campaign, called Making Ends Meet, has been taking place this summer in a collaboration with 25 local restaurants.

The restaurants provide an envelope to patrons to contribute along with their dining bill.

The money raised goes to support Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and Islands; Community Development Partnership, We Can and The Family Pantry of Cape Cod.

The involvement of the restaurants is no coincidence. Restaurant employees are typically among the region’s residents working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Organizers of the campaign describe it as an effort to raise money but also draw attention to the cause.

Jay Coburn of Community Development Partnership said, the seasonal economy on Cape Cod makes it challenging for many year round people. In fact for many Cape Codders, it takes multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

And it takes many organizations working together to provide a safety net, he said.

During the course of the campaign through September 15, guests at participating restaurants will receive a “Making Ends Meet” request envelope in the check presentation folder or find a contributions “can” when they settle up at the register.

Guests may also make their donations by mail or on-line through the secure website at

www.MakingEndsMeetCapeCod.org.

“Our neighbors and visitors on the Lower Cape are a key part of the success of my restaurants,” said Devon Ruesch, Owner of Devon’s and Devon’s Deep Sea Dive, both in Provincetown. “I know how vital these four organizations are in helping year-rounders in our community and we are glad to have this opportunity to reach out to our guests for their financial support.”

“Supporting this effort and the four community organizations is a logical extension of our community caring,” said Richard Costello, Owner, Chatham Squire. “Keep it local – it’s better for all of us.”

“The CDP, along with the Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands, The Family Pantry of Cape Cod, and WE CAN, provides a range of services and support to about 20,000 Cape Codders each year,” said Jay Coburn, Executive Director, Community Development Partnership. “As local businesses, our restaurant partners know better than most the challenges of our seasonal economy. That’s why they’ve joined with us to ensure that the safety net is maintained for those who need help “making ends meet.”
