Mashpee Considering Nitrogen Control

BallotMASHPEE – Mashpee voters will be considering a ballot question at town meeting that would call for regulations on the use of nitrogen based fertilizers at the meeting October 20th.

Michael Talbot of the town’s Environmental Oversight Committee says that if approved the measure could go a long way in sparing the town significant costs.

“The Cape Cod Commission estimated through their studies that if Mashpee could reduce the amount of nitrogen from lawn fertilizers getting into Popanesset and Waquoit Bays by fifty percent, we could defer up to 40 million dollars in infrastructure costs.

The costs would stem from necessary wastewater treatment requirements imposed by the state if nitrogen levels are not reduced.
