MASHPEE – A Mashpee resident is seeking to recall the chairman of the school committee in the wake of the criminal charges filed against superintendent Brian Hyde.

Papers were taken out this week with the town clerk’s office to recall Scott McGee. The move comes as Hyde awaits trial on breaking and entering and trespassing charges at a student’s home in September.

Supporters must first present 25 voter signatures to the town clerk’s office to begin the recall process. If they meet that requirement, signatures would then be needed from 25 percent of Mashpee voters to get the recall on the May town election ballot in May.

Hyde was placed on paid administrative leave by the school committee in November shortly after pleading not guilty to the charges. The School Committee named Assistant Superintendent Patricia DeBoer as Acting Superintendent.

A bench trial date has been set for January 15 in connection with the incident, which Hyde has called a residency check.

Marilyn King, the mother of the student involved in the residency check, alleges that Hyde trespassed into their home during his investigation.

King, who had recently purchased a house on Windsor Way in Mashpee, said Hyde arrived at the home unannounced and entered uninvited to search her daughter’s room, who was trying to re-enroll at Mashpee High School.

Hyde’s attorney, Drew Segadelli, has questioned the motive behind the case, suggesting King’s attorney is the person pushing the issue behind the scenes.

“The only person recognizing a hardship is my client, and that’s very unfortunate,” said Segadelli.

The case will be heard in Falmouth District Court.
