Mashpee Selectmen to Consider Tax Shift to Second Homeowners

moneyMASHPEE – A public hearing will be held in Mashpee on August 18th to discuss a proposal to shift some of the town’s tax burden to second homeowners.

A task force examining the impacts of implementing a residential tax exemption found about 4,900 residents would see their taxes go down, with about 5,800 having their taxes go up.

“The motivation behind this was to provide some meaningful property tax relief to the year-round residents of the town who are below the state average in median income and above the state average in age,” said Mashpee Selectman Andrew Gottlieb, a proponent of the plan.

Gottlieb said year-round homeowners with properties assessed at under $819,000 would see their taxes go down. Taxes would rise for second home owners.
