MASHPEE – Mashpee is about to become the latest Cape Cod town to ban single-use plastic bags.

Voters at town meeting Monday night approved the measure that will require retailers to stop using the bags within the next 12 months.

Supporters say the plastic bags are bad for the environment and wildlife.

Many other local towns, including Harwich, Wellfleet, Nantucket, Chatham, Falmouth and Barnstable already have plastic bag bans.

In other action, Mashpee voters indefinitely postponed an article that would have expanded the town’s noise bylaw and rejected 2 planning articles.

Several capital projects for the school department totaling about $500,000 were approved.
