Mashpee Voters to Decide Whether to Ban Retail Pot Sales

Mashopee Selectman Chair Andrew Gottlieb

MASHPEE – Mashpee’s Board of Selectmen recently voted unanimously to place a question on the spring election ballot, to decide whether to ban the retail sale of recreational marijuana in the town.

In November, voters in the town narrowly rejected legalization by just 600 votes, and the newly enacted law allows town’s to opt-out of the retail shop portion of the law. The measure passed statewide.

“The law that people voted to adopt expressly allows communities to put before their voters a question on whether they want to allow recreational retail outlets,” said Andrew Gottlieb, Chairman of Mashpee’s Board of Selectmen. “We’re just following the law allows us to do.”

While the town would receive a two percent local tax from a recreational marijuana retail outlet, the Mashpee’s board believes it sends the wrong message.

“I think that generally speaking, the board’s view was that having the town known as a retail outlet for recreational sales was not necessarily consistent with the image we want to put forward,” Gottlieb said.

Mashpee joins Falmouth and Bourne, who will also ask voters to choose the fate of marijuana retail establishments in their respective towns.
