Mass Maritime Teams With Boston Public School System for Enrollment Program

BUZZARDS BAY – The Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay and Boston Public Schools have announced a partnership, making a dual enrollment program that will guarantee admission to those who complete the coursework.

Up to 18 juniors are eligible for the program and financial aid will cover 100 percent of the students’ need.

“We decided to really string a program together for these young men and women to not only matriculate into Massachusetts Maritime but to actually graduate from Massachusetts Maritime,” said Massachusetts Maritime Admiral Francis McDonald.

According to a recent study by the Equality of Opportunity Project, Mass Maritime was among the schools where poor students were most likely to become rich adults.

Half of the students major in engineering while others study maritime and other subjects.

“We thought that we could also reach out to some folks in the city that have a particularly steep climb, that this could be a game-changer for their families as well,” said McDonald.

Benefits for students who enroll in the program include introduction to college level work and the accumulation of credit.

The program will also expand to 24 students annually in the coming years.
