Massachusetts GOP Makes Final Payment in Tea Party Suit

DemocratsrepublicansBOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts Republican Party has made the final payment to former GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Fisher to settle a lawsuit stemming from the party’s nominating convention.

Party officials wired the final installment of the $240,000 settlement to Fisher’s attorneys on Wednesday.

Fisher said he had received it.

Party officials initially ruled that Fisher, a tea party member, fell short of the 15 percent support required to continue on to the September 2014 primary ballot.

Fisher sued, claiming the party altered its own rules by counting blank ballots.

The GOP eventually agreed to certify Fisher, setting the stage for a primary contest with Charlie Baker.

Spokesman Terry MacCormack says the party continues to deny Fisher’s charges, but settled to “put this issue behind us.”
