McAuliffe Elected Speaker of Assembly of Delegates

YARMOUTH – Yarmouth’s representative to the Assembly of Delegates will lead Barnstable County’s legislative branch in its new term.

Suzanne McAuliffe was elected speaker last month, but has served in a variety of roles in Yarmouth for 25 years.

McAuliffe was one of the town’s representatives on the D-Y Regional School committee and a member of the Board of Selectmen.

“I had some ideas about moving the county forward and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to step up, especially since it was an open seat,” said McAuliffe.

She said that the Assembly’s role is to support local matters, like continuing to be involved in reducing nitrogen in coastal waters cape-wide.

“I am sort of starting down that path of trying to get the assembly on target with the very different budget processes this year and also looking at wastewater as a significant issue and also looking at the structure of county government once again,” said McAuliffe.

For now, McAuliffe said that the assembly is focused on the county’s budget, including working towards financial stability.

Commissioners have cut around $1 million for the Fiscal Year 2018 budget and the proposal is currently under review by the Assembly.
