BARNSTABLE – The Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year Committee has announced this year’s award winner.

Brewster resident Michelle DeSilva is the 14th winner of the award.

DeSilva, along with her son Dylan, run the non-profit Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops.

She was surprised to find out she was the winner of this year’s award.

“I realize what an honor it is because I know how many amazing women are out there doing great things on the Cape,” DeSilva said.

Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops has sent over 21,000 care packages to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq since its creation in 2005.

DeSilva said she is honored to win the award but gives all the credit to our service men and women.

“This is really about the troops, our veterans, our military, our wounded warriors and their families,” she said.

DeSilva will be presented the award on Monday, June 8 by last year’s recipient Mary Lou Petit at the Olde Colonial Courthouse in Barnstable Village.

The Mercy Otis Warren Woman of the Year Award was established in 2002 to recognize a Cape Cod woman who exemplifies the traits of leadership in the community and has made a significant contribution to the arts, education, business, community involvement and volunteerism.
