Mitchell River Bridge Detour Begins

Mitchell River Bridge in Chatham.

CHATHAM – Work on Mitchell River Bridge in Chatham is underway and traffic is being diverted on area roads Wednesday, September 17 through June 2016.

Bridge Street near the Mitchell River Bridge will be closed to all through traffic beginning during that time.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is replacing the drawbridge after months of wrangling with townspeople over maintaining the historic look of the bridge.

Local access to residences, public landings and commercial businesses will be maintained
while the bridge is being replaced.

The Mitchell River waterway will also remain open during the duration of the project, but boat passage under the bridge will be detoured outside the traditionally marked
channel during certain phases of construction.

The contractor will be installing detour signage throughout Chatham warning of the bridge
closure and identifying traffic detour routes.

Mobile electronic message boards will also be used.

During the first week of road closure the Chatham Police Department will provide on-site police
details.
