Nantucket Annual Town Meeting to Begin Monday

nantucket harborNANTUCKET – Annual Town Meeting gets underway on Nantucket Monday evening.

A number of the 111 articles on the warrant are expected to garner discussion including two major capital projects,  a new fire station and a new school building, according to Nantucket Town Manager Libby Gibson.

“The two overrides that would be put forward if approved at town meeting are debt exclusions, one for the fire station project and one for the school project.”

The fire station would cost $15 million dollars and the school expansion project totals over $46 million.

Gibson said that there are also around 30 citizen petitioner’s articles.

“One of the controversial citizen petitions may be a ban on the sale and use of balloons,” Gisbson said, “which would be an amendment to our town code that would prohibit balloons that are helium-filled.” The petitioners are concerned about the environmental damage from the balloons when they land on the beach or in the water.

Gibson said other articles that will likely get in-depth discussions are zoning articles, including one that would allow the hospital to increase its height.

Town meeting will start at 6 p.m. at Nantucket High School and could last three or four nights, according to Gibson.
