New Bedford Whaling Museum to Host Annual Moby-Dick Marathon

NEW BEDFORD – For the 21st straight year Moby-Dick and Herman Melville fans from around the world will come to New Bedford.

The annual Moby-Dick marathon will be held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum from January 6-8.

Literary aficionados, local students and readers of all ages will accompany narrator Ishmael on the epic whaling journey of Ahab and his hunt for the elusive white whale that took his leg.

The marathon marks the anniversary of Melville’s 1841 departure from the Port of New Bedford and Fairhaven aboard the whaleship Acushnet which would help inspire the 1951 novel.

The 25-hour event features coffee, warm chowder, theatrical performances, a children’s marathon and a reading of the abridged Portuguese adaptation of the novel.

Melville’s great-great-grandson, Peter Gansevoort Whittemore, will read the classic opening excerpt from Moby-Dick.

The novel will be read throughout different sections of the museum.

Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. on January 6. To purchase tickets and view a complete schedule visit whalingmuseum.org.
