New Restrictions Placed on Food Waste

recyclingBARNSTABLE – A new state policy on food waste has gone into effect.

Businesses that produce one ton or more food waste in a single week will not be allowed to put that waste in the trash, and will need to find alternatives for disposal.

Barnstable County Regional Waste Reduction Coordinator Dave Quinn said although the majority of Cape businesses don’t meet that one ton quota in a week,  that’s not stopping them from exploring cheaper alternatives for disposal.

“I think even without the ban the trend in waste management is moving towards separating that material out from the trash, just because there’s so much in there and it’s so costly to handle,” he said.

Quinn says only the largest of businesses will be impacted by the new restrictions.
