WOODS HOLE – Scientists with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will now be able to research the Arctic in a new way.
Scientists built a new robot, called the Nereid Under Ice vehicle, which has the ability to dive under ice and relay environmental data and high-definition footage to researchers. It is remotely operated by crews aboard a surface ship.
The vehicle cost about $3 million to build, with funding coming from WHOI and the National Science Foundation.
