Jack Jukubek, 22, of Newburgh, NY, who drowned Saturday in an Orleans pond

ORLEANS – A New York man who drowned during lifeguard tryouts in an Orleans lake was a collegiate swimmer who planned to become an assistant swim coach at his alma mater.

Rescue crews pulled Jack Jakubek, of Newburgh, from Pilgrim Lake around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.

Police say Jakubek was trying out for a summer lifeguard position at Nauset Beach. Jakubek had previously worked as a lifeguard in Orleans.

Jakubek graduated this month from the State University of New York at Cortland, where he was on the swim team.

Jakubek’s death remains under investigation.
