FALMOUTH — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association is paying for several conservation and dam removal projects in Massachusetts that are designed to protect river herring and other fish.

The four projects total more than $1.3 million. The largest grant is a $700,000 award the agency will use to provide money and technical assistance for the Herring River Restoration Project in Wellfleet.

Another grant would provide more than $400,000 to remove two dams associated with former cranberry operations in the Falmouth area. The other two grants will help with dam removals in the Taunton and Norwell areas.

NOAA also recently provided money to help remove a dam from the Sheepscott River in Maine.
