Non-Essential Water Restrictions Issued for Hyannis Water System

KA_Hyannis_Welcome Historic Main street sign_11315HYANNIS – Non-essential outdoor water use in the Hyannis Water System is being restricted as officials look to avoid a water shortage due to the ongoing drinking water health advisory.

Residents living at addresses with odd numbers can only water on odd-numbers days, use at even-numbered homes is restricted to even number days. Watering is only permitted between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m. The filling of swimming pools will not be allowed until further notice.

The move comes as town officials work to get the Hyannis Water System in compliance with new EPA regulations. Last month, two contaminants were found to be above new federal standards, leading to a drinking water health advisory.

Since the advisory was first issued last month, the DPW and Hyannis Water System have taken several steps to remediate the problem, including taking two wells off-line and restarting other wells.

Hyannis Water System officials say the potential for a water shortage exists due to the shutdown of the wells, making it necessary to control the volume of water being pumped each day.
