NRC Inspectors Monitoring Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station

nuclearPLYMOUTH – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says they are pleased with the way Entergy handled the precautionary shutdown of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station during the recent winter storm, but the power plant still remains under scrutiny because of their actions during the blizzard in late January.

Members of the NRC are currently conducting a special inspection of the plant with a final report due 45 days after the inspection is complete.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan said he is hoping the problems during the earlier shutdown will result in changes in procedures at the plant.

“We hope there are lessons learned that get incorporated for all future significant storms, because this has been twice in recent years where severe winter weather has resulted in a loss of offsite power and the plant having to shutdown,” said Sheehan.

The plant experienced equipment issues during winter storm Juno in January, causing the station to go off the grid for 12 days.

Sheehan says the latest precautionary shutdown last weekend was not required by the NRC but he said they are keeping a close eye on Pilgrim.

“We certainly kept close tabs on the latest storm response as well as their efforts to put the unit back into service,” said Sheehan.
