Old Horse Trough To Be Restored in Hyannis

Horse TroughHYANNIS – One hundred years ago, in the middle of Main Street at the intersection of Center Street, there was a horse watering trough, a convenient stop to quench the thirst of a passing steed.

About five or six years ago, when the intersection was being reconfigured for the installation of traffic lights, Department of Public Works staff removed the trough, according to Len Gobeil, special projects coordinator for the Town of Barnstable.

“The horse trough was taken and as they were trying to move it and save it, it actually fell apart,” Gobeil said.

But while the mounting for the trough was broken, the trough remained intact, he said. It still has an engraving on it that states, “Presented by Social Service Department HWC 1914,” according to Gobeil.

“It’s a historic landmark we’re trying to replicate and replace,” he said. Reinstalling the trough in the middle of the street was not possible, so, instead, it will go on town-owned property at the nearby Hyannis Transportation Center.

The Barnstable Community Preservation Committee approved a sum of $2,000 dollars to restore the trough.

The proposal still needs to be approved by the Barnstable Town Council.
