One Step Closer for Sandwich Artificial Turf Field Project

fieldSANDWICH – Sandwich High School is just one step away from having a turf field installed at the Captain Gerald F. DeConto Veterans’ Memorial Stadium.

A provision allocating $5,000 in the state budget to install the turf has made it through conference committee.

It now awaits final approval from the Governor.

Capt. DeConto’s brother, David DeConto, who serves as the President of the Sandwich Sports Complex Committee, said the project has had many ups and downs.

“I don’t like to count my chickens before they’re hatched,” he said about hearing the progress of the bill.

Senator Therese Murray inserted the funding into the budget after Sandwich voters rejected funding in May.

Deconto said he is crossing his fingers that the funding is ultimately approved.

The turf field would be a part of the facility honoring Naval Captain and Sandwich resident Jerry Deconto, who died while in the Pentagon during the September 11 terrorist attacks.
